Introduction to Woodturning
(Prerequisite: Shop Equipment & Joinery Workshop)
Learn the art of the lathe from Master Woodturner Jon Kruger. This 2-evening course will consist of taking each student from introduction, to turning a simple open vessel. This class is a prerequisite for Open Shop for Woodturners.
Course Description and Schedule
This class will meet on two evenings from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the JK Chicago workshop, 1800 W. Cuyler.

Session One:
- Meet and Greet
Students will be introduced to a wide range of finished pieces, and the various types of turning methods used to create them. - Source Material: WOOD!
What we use can be hard to picture. Each student will have a block of wood provided. We will discuss the many types of wood which can be used, and where to get it. Ranging from hardwood suppliers, to nature, to the scrap heap, there are endless possibilities for source material. We will discuss how to judge a usable piece (examples provided) of found wood as opposed to a non usable piece, and why. We will discuss green turning (wet wood), and dry turning. Choosing the type of wood to best suit the end result. - THE LATHE!
What it is and how it works. Different speeds for different results. - Get to Know Your Tools
Gouges, skews, and scrapers. We will discuss and demonstrate the sharpening of the tools, and it's importance to success in turning. We will demonstrate which tools to use when going for an open vessel (bowl) or a hollow vessel (vase) using the blind hollowing technique.
Session Two:
- Brief review of topics covered in Session 1.
- Hands on woodturning begins!
Students will become will practice securing wood into the lathe, and using the tools. - Each student will complete a simple open vessel.
